By day I work as a programmer/CEO/one-man-show at a small software development company called Interware Innovations. In my spare time, I'm the CEO of an online poker training site: Grinderschool.com

comment Is Small Ball Poker In Cash Games A Good Strategy?
"Are you advocating that big-ball style is preferable to small-ball style in tournament poker?" That's going to depend on the structure of the tournament, who your opponents are, and how likely you are to have your table break in the near future. In the early/middle stages of a $10k deep stacked tournament, small-ball makes a lot more sense than in the same stages of a $200 event with a shorter structure. And it may be worth noting that most online tournaments represent a relatively short structure with a high likelihood of table breakage.

And I completely agree that small-ball is not even possible as a strategy when you inevitably begin to become short-stacked in tournaments. That's the primary tenet of the second paragraph of my original answer.

I'm not comparing them in terms of other pots. Big pots are always going to be more important than small pots. I'm saying that, all other factors being equal, play in the cash format benefits more from winning lots of small pots than does play in the tournament format.

I am not saying that the majority of your profit will ever come from small pots in either format (save, perhaps, if you are in an ideal situation late in a tournament, with a big stack and a tight table). If you read through the linked info, one of the tenants of making this strategy profitable is "Small ball poker benefits from players who call you down with mediocre hands because they do not give you credit for holding a strong hand." That's where the real profit comes in, but the small pots you win along the way are more relevant in cash than in MTTs.

It is virtually impossible to address the question of how many players could be expected to use this strategy in a tournament. That is going to depend on WAY too many factors to address in any meaningful way, and even if it were addressed completely, it would change in few months as players learn new strategies and incorporate new adjustments.

I agree that he is not folding. I think your range is too narrow though. Certainly combo draws should be included, as well as other two-pair hands (with or without a draw). 33xx should be discounted as less likely to have continued on the flop. I'd also be inclined to include A♣ Q♣ x x

I didn't say that I wanted to punish people who were drawing - I said I wanted to charge them. I have decent equity on the flop against most drawing hands, so long as they don't already have a set or have me in the freerolling situation you describe. In my mind, that was reason enough to build the pot a bit before they give up from having missed, or I lose my equity from a draw hitting. Can you elaborate what line(s) you prefer for flop and turn, along with the reasons you feel they are better?

comment What is a straddle bet?
Sometimes. Another variant is the Indiana straddle. It depends largely on the order in which the positions get the chance to straddle.

comment What is a 'wet board'?
It is worth noting that just as one might suspect, the opposite of a wet board is a dry board (e.g. a board with random disconnected cards).
