I've always been afraid or too annoyed to really give it a fair try, I guess. Even with the really low limits, it seems that some people just don't play the cards, and instead just throw chips around. But I haven't bothered in a long time. Perhaps things have gotten better in recent years after the hype died down.

Do you find playing for "play money" helpful? It seems to me that too many players at these kinds of tables go all in far more often because their chips don't mean anything.

+1 for helping your friend get better. I've enjoyed learning along with my group of poker playing friends, and learning tactics and strategies that each one brings to the table. We have a great time playing against one another, but beyond our own table, I view us almost as a team, going out and conquering the world. It's good and fun to contribute to my friends' success.

comment How can I keep my skills sharp without online real-money poker?
Just as importantly, the decisions OTHERS make when no money is riding on their decision significantly changes the play, too. I'm wary of any online play, cash or free, because I don't know how much value a person puts on that two dollar bet.

What were the suits of the cards? It matters in particular because each player had a hole card that might play, and they can't both be of the same suit.
